TalkAtlas Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Quantbit Studios ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use the TalkAtlas mobile application ("the App", "TalkAtlas") on Android devices.
By using TalkAtlas, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
1. Information We Collect
TalkAtlas is designed to minimise data collection. We collect only what is necessary to provide the App's features:
- Location data: When you use the Wayfinder feature, the App accesses your device's GPS location to calculate routes and provide navigation. Location data is processed in real-time and is not stored on our servers.
- Microphone audio: When you use voice translation, voice-driven globe search, or speak phrases for translation, your device's microphone captures audio. This audio is processed for speech-to-text conversion and is not retained.
- App preferences: Settings such as your preferred ambient audio track, globe theme, mute state, and language preferences are stored locally on your device using Android's standard preferences system.
- Subscription status: If you purchase a premium subscription, Google Play Billing records this. We receive a notification from Google indicating whether you have an active subscription, but we do not receive your payment details, credit card information, or billing address.
- Daily usage count: The App tracks how many AI-powered queries you make each day on your device to enforce the free tier's daily limit. This count is stored only on your device.
2. Third-Party Services
TalkAtlas relies on the following third-party services to provide its features. When you use the relevant feature, your input is sent to these services for processing:
- OpenAI — Used to generate AI-powered phrases, cultural information, and globe assistant responses. Your text input is sent to OpenAI for processing. See OpenAI's privacy policy at https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.
- DeepL and Microsoft Azure Translator — Used to translate text and phrases between languages. Your text input is sent for translation.
- Google Maps Platform — Used by the Wayfinder feature for location autocomplete, place details, route calculation, and map display. See Google's privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
- Google Play Billing — Used for processing subscriptions. Payment information is handled entirely by Google. See Google's privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
- Android Speech Recognition — The Android operating system's built-in speech-to-text service is used for voice input. This is provided by your device and may involve Google's speech recognition services.
- Android Text-to-Speech — The Android operating system's built-in text-to-speech service is used to speak translations and directions aloud.
3. How We Use Your Information
The information described above is used solely to provide the App's features. Specifically:
- Location is used to calculate routes and provide navigation directions.
- Microphone audio is used to convert speech to text for translation and search features.
- App preferences and usage counts are used to personalise your experience and enforce free tier limits.
- Subscription status is used to determine whether to grant access to premium features.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
4. Data Storage and Retention
App preferences and daily usage counts are stored on your device using Android's standard local storage and are deleted when you uninstall the App. Subscription status is managed by Google Play and follows Google's data retention policies.
We do not operate servers that store your personal data. Information sent to third-party services (OpenAI, DeepL, Azure, Google) is subject to those services' own privacy policies and data retention practices.
5. Permissions
TalkAtlas requests the following Android permissions:
- Internet: Required to send requests to OpenAI, translation services, and Google Maps.
- Location (fine and coarse): Required for the Wayfinder feature to calculate routes from your current location.
- Microphone (record audio): Required for voice input features.
You may revoke any of these permissions at any time through your device's settings. Some features will not work without their required permissions.
6. Children's Privacy
TalkAtlas is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
7. International Users
TalkAtlas is operated from the United Kingdom. If you use the App from outside the UK, please be aware that information sent to third-party services may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, including the United States.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction (including under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR), you may have the following rights:
- The right to access information held about you
- The right to request correction of inaccurate information
- The right to request deletion of your information
- The right to object to certain types of processing
- The right to data portability
Because TalkAtlas does not store personal information on our servers, most of these rights apply to the third-party services we use. To exercise these rights with respect to data held by those services, please contact them directly.
9. Security
We take reasonable precautions to protect any data processed by the App. All communications with third-party services occur over encrypted HTTPS connections. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the App's features or in legal requirements. The "Last updated" date at the top of this policy will indicate the date of the most recent revision. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
